As much as we all love the unique smells of herbs, spices, veggies, meats and more, sometimes those potent fragrances can get trapped inside the house for longer than we’d like, and seep into the furniture or your clothes. Who else has had the experience of guests about to come over, and the entire place still smells like garlic, fish or curry?

In times like these, we tend to reach for artificially scented air fresheners that are laden with toxic ingredients. While they may smell good, they’re not necessarily good for you. Instead, we prefer these two simple, natural, and effective recipes that some argue work better than big name odor eliminators.

Two Mixtures That Will Make Your House Smell Good

Natural Air Freshener Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 spray bottle
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
    • Baking soda is a fantastic (and necessary) ingredient because it does not just cover up bad odors. It actually absorbs them.
  • 3 cups lukewarm water
  • 3 tablespoons all-natural fabric softener (recipe below)

Instructions

  1. Pour 3 tablespoons of your all-natural fabric softener into the spray bottle
  2. Top the spray bottle up with 3 cups of lukewarm water
  3. Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda in with the liquids
  4. Seal the spray bottle and shake it well to form a mixture
  5. Spray the mixture throughout your house where you need it most
  6. When you’re done, store the bottle in a cool, dark, dry place
